HOW taking the photo effects the meaning

I've found three ways that photo effects meaning most efficiently.

ANGLE - this determines where your reader's eye will go in the photo. It determines what they will see first, last, etc. it also determines the size of certain letters in relation to themselves and their surroundings.

LIGHTING - lighting has the ability to create the whole "feel" or "mood" of the photo. it can be high in contrast which creates drama, tension, mystery. Or it can be well lit with sunlight giving it a softer, more natural feel. lighting helps control how your viewer feels when looking at the photo.

SURROUNDINGS - this is the most important aspect of how taking the photo effects meaning. where you place the photo according to the horizon line, if you incorporate human life, if it is outside or inside, what buildings/props are in the photo. All of these factor in to create the meaning and importance of the photograph.

so, the three most important how's would be directing the viewer's eye, creating a mood and giving it a meaning.

Process Photos

one of our locations will be on this wall. The texture and heigh and color against the sky creates contrast and intensity.

we also love this ledge at Wescoe. among constrast we also liked the way it is elevated, it creates interest and intensity.

we wanted to find a way to have our letters hang over the top of this building. we love the old insane asylum feel that this building gives off.

IDEO Movie Response

This movie was extremely helpful as far as setting up a picture for how a group of people should work together in achieving a final product. Obviously, we were given the task of redesigning a poorly designed everyday object, and this was almost the same task the IDEO group was given in redesigning the shopping cart. It's nice to see a group of people in such an esteemed business being so creative and open minded. I think that's the biggest thing to take from this video. The fact that no idea is stupid, or too far fetched. Because it's those ideas that can be reformed and refined into something that is better as well achievable.

Film Response

This documentary, by far, was one of the most interesting and enlightening
I have seen to this day. I have never spent so much time studying what makes
"good" design, and at first I was skeptical that someone could put that
label on a product. But after seeing "Objectified" my opinion completely changed.
One interesting point that has really stuck with me is the fact that our world is constantly
changing and progressing. It seems that as soon as the first iPod came out and
everyone finally owned one, there was a smaller, cooler, newer model already
out on the market. Therefore, design has to be made to last. It has to
stand the test of time. And that is probably the one most important point I took away
from this film. The fact that a good design will last forever. Good design makes people happy,
it is not only used for its function, but to "show off" as well.  Good design is not
a term to be thrown around lightly, but really considered when creating a product
or on the other end of the spectrum, buying one.

Five Faves

For this I took one of my favorite blind contour drawings and cleaned it
up by connecting the lines and erasing the extra.

This started as an experiment between negative and positive space.
I really enjoyed the contrast between what is in the shades,
and what is out. I am not happy with the quality however.

This started as a quick gesture. I went back and defined the lines to
make it cleaner. I really liked how the proportions turned out.

This started as a blind contour (one of my favorite ways to draw)
and I went back and added toning and shading to give it more interest.

After erasing the shape of the sunglasses away from the graphite
background, I added contour lines. I like how clean it turned out.
