I've found three ways that photo effects meaning most efficiently.
ANGLE - this determines where your reader's eye will go in the photo. It determines what they will see first, last, etc. it also determines the size of certain letters in relation to themselves and their surroundings.
LIGHTING - lighting has the ability to create the whole "feel" or "mood" of the photo. it can be high in contrast which creates drama, tension, mystery. Or it can be well lit with sunlight giving it a softer, more natural feel. lighting helps control how your viewer feels when looking at the photo.
SURROUNDINGS - this is the most important aspect of how taking the photo effects meaning. where you place the photo according to the horizon line, if you incorporate human life, if it is outside or inside, what buildings/props are in the photo. All of these factor in to create the meaning and importance of the photograph.
so, the three most important how's would be directing the viewer's eye, creating a mood and giving it a meaning.
